What is the ILM Award in First Line Management?

The Award in First Line Management is accredited by The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), one of the UK’s leading providers of management qualifications. This award has been specially designed to give practising or aspiring first line managers a solid foundation in their formal development as a manager.

How does the Award in First Line Management qualification work?

This Award is accredited as part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 3. The course consists of four modules which must be completed within two years in order to gain the full qualification. Within the qualification there are a number of assignments which take the form of work-based assignments and written reports.

What are the aims of the course?

The specific aims of the ILM Award in First Line Management are to:

• provide a recognised management qualification at NQF Level 3 for first line managers as accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management
• allow students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in a management role
• provide a comprehensive basis for further study

What will I study?

The Award in First Line Management is a concise qualification which gives an introduction to the basic skills, knowledge, and understanding required by today’s first line manager. This ILM Award is comprised of four mandatory units. It provides a guided development programme which begins with the unit Writing for Business which is designed to enhance your writing skills and to provide you with the expertise necessary to write formal business reports and other appropriate business documents.

Students will then go on to study Developing Yourself and Others during which you will learn how to identify training and development needs and how to plan and monitor training designed to address those needs. The third module is Understanding the Communication Process in the Workplace which will cover the importance of effective communication and how best to overcome any communication barriers which may exist. The final module in the Award is Solving Problems and Making Decisions. This unit is designed to develop practical techniques for tackling managerial problems and making decisions from gathering and interpreting information through to the effective communication of outcomes.

How do I get started?

Getting started is easy!

There are no formal entry requirements but participants will normally be practising or aspiring first line managers with the opportunity to meet the assessment demands and have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme.

In practice this usually means that you will need experience from a current or previous position which you can discuss within written assessments.

It would also be of benefit if students are able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing; in particular those written formats commonly seen in a business context, for example business reports or letters.

If you have any queries just call one of our team on Freephone 0800 678 1053 to discuss entry qualifications, payment options, study support or any other questions you may have.
