What do you need to get started?
It is recommended that you have studied and achieved passes as follows:
• Level 3 NVQ (GNVQ or GSVQ)
• A programme of national units related to the course you want to study
• 2 AS Levels or Scottish Higher Grades
• An equivalent qualification or training certificate acceptable as evidence of prior learning

Unique opportunity to qualify for a better future at home
These courses have been developed by DCA in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and in conjunction with colleges, universities and industry. As such, they work to provide relevant, up to date knowledge and skills that are mapped to UK wide competency frameworks. The DCA range of HNC and HND Business courses meet the standards required to give your career and earnings a real boost. DCA is the only organisation offering home study for HNC and HND on a national basis
HNCs and HNDs fit into the National Qualifications Framework at level 7, which is about the same level as the first year of a college or university programme, and level 8, which is about the same level as the second year at Uni. They are also broadly comparable with vocational qualifications (VQ’s) at levels 4 and 5.
How do they work?
Each course is made up of a number of study units, covering both general and specialised areas of knowledge, A study unit carries either one or two credits.
Earn credits and recognition as you progress through each unit.
DCA and the SQA have structured the learning so that, at the successful completion of each unit, your work will be assessed and a credit will be awarded to you. So, each time you make progress, your ability and self worth will improve.
Study at your own pace and earn as you learn.
An HNC is made up of 12 credits and would take about a year to complete. An HND is made up of 30 credits and would take about two years to complete. Depending on how many study hours you have available the part-time distance learning courses can be completed in approximately the same timeframe. However, don’t worry. There’s no pressure or timetable and no classes to attend. You have the flexibility to study anywhere and in your own time. You can continue with your present job to earn while you learn!
Flexibility and choice.
Each course consists of mandatory credits, but there are also some areas where you can make specialist choices, depending on whether you prefer HR to Marketing, for example. Please look at the listing for each qualification later in this section to see what subject areas are covered.
What you can do with an HNC or HND
As already mentioned, because HNCs and HNDs were developed with employers and industry in mind, they are an excellent way to improve your job prospects and increase your earning potential. Research has shown that people with a qualification at this level typically earn up to double than those without.
In addition, because HNCs and HNDs are part of the National Qualifications Framework and recognised in the National Qualifications Authority, they may, in some cases also allow you entry into more advanced study at college and university in the second or final year. The credits you earn really add up and tell the world you are an achiever!
