| Q: |
I have been out of school for a while. Is help available if I need it? |
| A: |
Although each of DCA’s programmes is offered by independent home study, support is always available. Many students who have not undertaken formal study for some time feel nervous about starting something new. You are not alone and should you encounter any type of difficulty with any aspect of your studies you can speak to our student services staff via our Freephone number. If necessary, they will put you in touch with a subject expert in your field. If you prefer communicating by other methods you can receive assistance by post, fax or e-mail. Providing you with an optimum level of student support services is DCA’s highest priority. |
| Q: |
I'm the type of person who is always on the go. Am I forced to study on a fixed schedule? |
| A: |
DCA realises that everyone has different responsibilities, interests, goals and commitments. Flexibility is built into the programme and we encourage students to take this into account and design their own personal study schedule. The course is structured in such a way as to guide you through the materials in manageable chunks, and awards credit for each HN unit successfully completed. By working within this framework students get the maximum benefit from their programmes and progress at a pace that suits them. |

| Q: |
Is home learning something new? |
| A: |
Not at all. The concept of continuing education through home learning programmes has existed for well over 100 years. Open and distance learning is fast becoming an accepted and indispensible part of mainstream education. More and more educational institutions are realising the benefits of distance learning and offering home learning programmes as a viable alternative to the conventional classroom setting. In fact, most universities and colleges in the U.K. offer some form of home learning as part of their regular calendar. |
| Q: |
What are the benefits of studying at home? |
| A: |
An increasing number of people are looking to home learning as a practical means of upgrading skills, launching a second career or improving their earning potential. The benefits of home learning can be valuable: doing things at your own pace, learning at times and in places that suit you, being able to put what you learn into practice in your own situation straight away, and enhancing your prospects without having to take too much time out from other aspects of your life. When students learn at a distance, they also develop valuable life skills, such as experience in setting goals and objectives, improved time management, the ability to reflect on their learning and act on it, good problem-solving skills and greater self-esteem. |
| Q: |
What sort of people study by home learning? |
| A: |
Our students are as varied as the range of programmes that we offer. HNC and HND students include school leavers, adult returners to education, those already in employment wishing to enhance their career prospects, and those who are, or wish to be self-employed and require a broad grounding in business. Many have families and demanding schedules - both of which often conflict with the rigid timetabling of classes in conventional educational settings. For these students, home learning offers the most logical way in which to reach their goals. In fact, a large percentage of DCA students enrol in programmes based on the recommendation of other current and former students. |
| Q: |
Will these programmes really help me get a job? |
| A: |
The HNC and HND Business have been specifically designed in consultation with employers, higher education institutions and professional bodies to give you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen field. Employers recognise the value of these qualifications and those holding an HNC or HND typically earn more than those who do not. In addition, many employers will recognise the initiative, determination and commitment you have demonstrated by earning your qualification. |
| Q: |
What type of job might the HNC or HND help me to get? |
| A: |
Employers have identified a wide range of interesting and exciting job roles for which HNC/D graduates would typically be recruited. These include: Administrative Officer/ Supervisor, Business Development Assistant, Finance Assistant, Team Leader, Personal Assistant and Trainee Manager. A bright future awaits you! |
| Q: |
What else can I do with an HNC or HND in Business? |
| A: |
Many HNC/D graduates go on to further study at university level, with the HNC in some cases allowing entry to university at second year level, and the HND to year three. These qualifications are also recognised by some professional bodies. For further details on this, please see click on the Course Summary link on this page. |
| Q: |
Do you follow the traditional academic calendar or can I start at any time? |
| A: |
With DCA Home learning you can start your studies at any time. Unlike traditional colleges and universities there is no need to wait for the beginning of the next academic year - which means you can make maximum use of your time and gain your qualification more quickly. |
| Q: |
Can I afford to study at home? |
| A: |
There is a very definite link between lifelong learning and increasing earning potential. In fact, making the decision to improve your earning capacity now could easily translate into thousands of pounds over the rest of your working life.
