What is the Legal Studies Certificate?
The Legal Studies Level 2 Certificate is accredited by City and Guilds, the UK’s leading provider of vocational qualifications. City and Guilds has developed the certificate in conjunction with the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) which is the governing membership body for Legal Executives and plays a unique and important role within the legal profession. This qualification can help you to take on a job in legal administration, or improve your skills and knowledge in any job where you need a basic understanding of the law. The certificate is aimed at students working, or wishing to work, in legal administration, perhaps as a court or barristers' clerk, administrative paralegal, legal secretary or in a legal advice centre. You may want to increase your skills and take on more responsibility in the legal sector; however you don't need any legal experience to take the qualification.
How does the Legal Studies qualification work?
This Level 2 Certificate is accredited as part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 2. The course consists of three modules which must be completed within two years in order to gain the full certificate. Within the qualification there are a number of assignments which take the form of multiple choice tests, two written assessments and an external multiple choice format examination.
What are the aims of the course?
The specific aims of the Legal Studies Level 2 Certificate are to:
• Meet the needs of students who work or want to work in the legal profession as court clerks (criminal and civil), barristers’ clerks, administrative paralegals, cost draftsmen, legal secretaries, or advice centre personnel in the legal sector
• Allow students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the legal sector
• Contribute to the knowledge and understanding towards the Legal Advice National Occupational Standards (NOS), while containing additional skills and knowledge which go beyond the scope of the NOS.
What will I study?
The Legal Studies Level 2 Certificate consists of three modules; The Legal Environment, Principles of Liability, and Law in the Workplace. In The Legal Environment you will develop a basic knowledge of how laws are made and by whom, and gain an overview of how the legal system operates in relation to both civil and criminal matters. Next, in Principles of Liability, you will study the principles of criminal, contract and tort law. In the final module, Law in the Workplace, you will study employment law in relation to equality in the work place, grievance and disciplinary procedures and aspects of Health and Safety legislation.
